Holz introduced remote sensing to the University of Texas, authoring one of the first textbooks in the subject and developing both undergraduate and graduate classes and research facilities. He specializes in the application of remote sensing to the solution of environmental problems, especially in the Middle East and Texas/Mexico borderlands.
