Behavioral Data mining and Machine Learning

This project is ongoing.

The Developmental Intelligence (DI) lab focuses on building an integrated science of learning in humans and machines. Recent advances in the theory and practice of machine learning, data science, and statistics have led to unprecedented capabilities for leveraging large-scale datasets and have resulted in substantial performance gains in many areas. In spite of these advances, the capabilities of modern artificial learning systems still pale in comparison to the competencies of human learners. Particularly striking are the differences between the characteristics of human learning and the paradigms that currently guide machine learning. Researchers in machine learning, data science, and artificial intelligence are increasingly looking to developmental science for inspiration and ideas that could lead to new paradigms for machine learning.

We are looking for highly motivated students with machine learning knowledge to work on machine learning and data mining projects. In the lab, we use machine learning and computational modeling to analyze large datasets and gain insights into human learning processes. The example projects include using deep learning models to process video, audio and motion tracking data. The students will gain valuable experience on how to use machine learning algorithms to answer scientific questions.

I'M INTERESTED IN THIS PROJECT. WHAT SHOULD I DO NEXT?

The Office of Undergraduate Research recommends that you attend an info session or advising before contacting faculty members or project contacts about research opportunities. We'll cover the steps to get involved, tips for contacting faculty, funding possibilities, and options for course credit. Once you have attended an Office of Undergraduate Research info session or spoken to an advisor, you can use the "Who to contact" details for this project to get in touch with the project leader and express your interest in getting involved.
