Belongingness in social science classrooms

Although the application date for this project is past, the project is still ongoing. You may still wish to contact this professor about other ways of getting involved with this work. Please attend an info session or contact email for more information.

The Williamson Lab, in the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences, is seeking highly motivated HDFS majors to work on a research project examining feelings of belongingness in social science students. This is a good fit for students who are interested in learning how to conduct a research project from start to finish, and have interest in this topic. RAs will work together in a small group, supervised by Dr. Williamson, to complete this research project.

RAs will be paid $14/hour and will work 5-10 hours per week during the Fall and Spring semesters. Alternatively RAs can opt to enroll for HDF355R course credit.

To apply:

1) complete the application here

2) email Daniela Esquivel Cantu letting her know that you have applied

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until all positions are filled.

Qualifications

We are seeking students who are upper division HDFS majors. No research experience is required, but experience with qualitative research methods (e.g., focus groups, thematic coding) is an asset. Students must have the ability to work in a team of students, as well as the drive to complete tasks independently.

Project Timeline

The project will begin at the start of the Fall semester (August 2024) and continue through the end of the academic year. Students are expected to commit to Fall and Spring semesters.

Duties

RAs will work in a team to develop an interview schedule and conduct focus groups with other students about their experiences in their social science courses. RAs will conduct thematic coding on the transcripts of the focus groups and use the results to develop a survey to be administered to additional students. RAs will quantitatively analyze the results from the survey data.
