Confronting Risk and Uncertainty in Early Modern France, 1500-1700

This project is ongoing.

This project, in its initial stages, aims to study how the decline in the belief in providence was accompanied by an increasing awareness of the role of fortune, chance, and, hence, risk in human endeavors. French texts from the early modern period are replete with references to chance and risk, which afford a new perspective on these texts.

Note: there is no funding available to support student researchers.
