This project consists of qualitative interviews with women who have engaged in cervical cancer screening as well as providers who provide these screening services to better understand how women experience preventative care. The project includes interviews with women who have immigrated to Austin from Latin American countries, as well as women living in rural Puebla, Mexico. We hope to identify areas for future interventions to improve screening uptake, timely follow-up, and referral to higher levels of care. We are specifically seeking bilingual Spanish and English speakers with native fluency in Spanish to assist with translation of interview transcripts.
This project is led by 3rd year Dell Medical School student, Karen Haney, with the mentorship of Dr. Tim Mercer, Chief of the Division of Global Health in the Department of Population Health. Dr. Marcela Castillo, Assistant Professor in the Department of Women’s Health is also providing mentorship on the project.
We are seeking students who are bilingual Spanish and English speakers with native Spanish fluency. Please include background information on your language experiences when inquiring. Additionally, although not required for this opportunity, you may also provide background on any qualitative research or previous translation experience, if any.
The bulk of the translation work will take place in February and March 2020, and it is anticipated that during these months, the expected time commitment will be 10h/week. The project will conclude in May 2020.
Primary duties will be the translation of Spanish interview transcripts to English. If interested and scheduling permits, there may be opportunities to attend interviews as well.
