The Family Asthma Study - Community-Based Intervention Research Study

The Family Asthma Study is seeking undergraduate research assistants (RAs) with an interest in community-based research, health disparities, and behavioral interventions among low-SES Latinx families. The Family Asthma Study is testing a family-based program that helps kids and their parents manage and learn about their asthma. Undergraduate RAs will gain valuable knowledge and experience about the delivering and evaluating a family-based behavioral health intervention. Opportunities for independent research and course credit are available.

Opportunities starting in Summer and Fall 2024: We are seeking undergraduate research assistants to conduct family assessments, code observations and interviews, conduct literature reviews, and conduct data management and analyses. On-site, community-based, and virtual/hybrid opportunities are available. Please submit your application prior to the start of the Fall 2024 semester for full consideration.

Qualifications
  • Interest in gaining experience in psychology, child development, or health research
  • Interest in working with Latinx families
  • Interest in gaining experience in collecting and coding data
  • Highly motivated, detail-oriented, conscientious, and reliable
  • Able to communicate and effectively with other lab members
  • Proficiency in Spanish is preferred, but not required

Students must be able to commit to at least 10 hours/week and at least 2 long semesters, and register for 1 semester of EDP 379L (independent research in Educational Psychology) or a related research course at UT. 

Duties

Duties may include one or more of the following activities:

  • Conducting interviews and assessments with families that are enrolled in the study
  • Attending community-based recruitment events to recruit new families
  • Supporting the training of community-based intervention facilitators 
  • Coding intervention sessions and family interviews
  • Conducting literature reviews
  • Preparing materials and other administrative activities necessary for assessments and intervention sessions

Opportunities for co-authorship on presentations and manuscripts are available to highly motivated and involved students.

10 hrs/wk
Desired Length of Commitment
At least 2 long semesters (e.g., fall and spring).
