Ordinary Unhappiness: A Social History of the Soul

This project is ongoing.

I am researching a book-length social history of the experience of personhood colloquially known as "having a soul."

Qualifications

Students interested in being research assistants are required to have taken at least one of the following classes in the English Department:  E337 ("Early American Literature: Beginnings to 1865") or E379 ("American Literature and Thought"). This requirement is not flexible. Ideally, prospective students should also be English majors, though there is more leeway in this requirement.

Project Timeline

This research project will probably be open until 2027 or 2028.

I'M INTERESTED IN THIS PROJECT. WHAT SHOULD I DO NEXT?

The Office of Undergraduate Research recommends that you attend an info session or advising before contacting faculty members or project contacts about research opportunities. We'll cover the steps to get involved, tips for contacting faculty, funding possibilities, and options for course credit. Once you have attended an Office of Undergraduate Research info session or spoken to an advisor, you can use the "Who to contact" details for this project to get in touch with the project leader and express your interest in getting involved.
