Production, perception and recognition of speech varying in intelligibility

This project is ongoing.

This project aims to understand how variation due to changes in talker, accent, and speech clarity impacts speech intelligibility, memory for words and word recognition for native listeners and for listeners whose native language background varies from the target language. To that end we will investigate how native and non-native listeners perceptually process sounds, words and sentences produced by native and non-native talkers in conversational and clear speaking style and masked by different types of noise (e.g., speech shaped noise vs. multi-talker babble).

Qualifications

Student should have taken LIN344K: Phonet: Prod/Percpt Spe Sounds; GPA 3.5 and higher

Project Timeline

Spring semester (although the preference is for a student to commit to a year at least)

Duties

Student will participate in experimental setup, subject recruitment, data collection and data analyses.
