I study how people learn second and additional languages, including how their native language affects second language learning and how second language learning affects their native language. My primary focus is on second language speaking and pronunciation. In my research, I investigate how individuals learn to hear and produce the sounds of a new language, which helps them recognize words in that language accurately and efficiently. I'm also interested in what makes second language speech easy to understand from the listener's perspective. Beyond speech learning, I'm interested in the links between motivation, behavior, and learning.
I have worked with diverse students who have a range of research interests and experience. The only requirement I have is that students have the time to engage in research and an interest in language and language learning. Through the lab, assistants are trained on the specific research tools and skills needed to carry out their assigned project.
I have also directed honor's projects related to language and language learning. The most recent honor's project I directed was a study on how the context in which a word is embedded affects listener's ability to perceive that word accurately.
