Jonathan C Brown
Job Title
Research Interests

Professor Brown's current efforts are directed toward publishing a political biography of the man who took the Panama Canal. General Omar Torrijos ruled Panama as a moderate dictator and, by mobilizing world opinion against US imperialism, he convinced President Jimmy Carter and the US Senate to turn over the canal to the Panamanian government. This general did not have to fire a shot. Later this year, Pittsburgh University Press will come out with his book, The Weak and the Powerful: Omar Torrijos, the US, and the Nonaligned Movement.  Jonathan Brown specializes in Cold War history and Latin American history.
