TX STRIDE

This project is closed. No applications are allowed.

TX STRIDE (Strength Through Resilience in Diabetes Education) is a NIH-funded culturally tailored, resilience-

based diabetes self-management education trial for African American adults with type 2 diabetes. We need

students to assist us in collecting data on-site and conducting 24-hr diet recalls for participants. This is a great

opportunity for students to build their skill set, enhance their resume, and engage in community-based

research.

Qualifications

Good communication skills You will need to be added to the IRB and receive training on NDSR and the dietary recall protocol before beginning your work on the project. You will also need to be trained on taking blood pressure and waist circumference measurements prior to attending Saturday data collection sessions.

If you have experience collecting nutritional information, that is a bonus! We are looking for undergraduates who are passionate about the project and research.

Project Timeline

We would like someone to commit to two semesters (Summer, Spring Fall), but may be willing to do just one depending on the situation.

Duties

Time commitment: Data collections will occur in both the fall and spring semester (August – May).  Participants

will attend data collection sessions on Saturday mornings 1-3 times per month. Diet recalls will be taken at

these sessions and the week following each session. We are looking for students who can commit to attending 1

Saturday morning data collection session per month and completing a minimum of 6 diet recalls per month. The

Saturday sessions last 3-5 hours and recalls take approximately 30-40 minutes each. There is an opportunity to

continue on with the project after May 2023 as we will continue collecting data.

Requirements: Attend one Saturday morning data collection session per month. All other work is completed

remotely. The student must have a phone with text capability and a computer with a reliable internet

connection

Work Assignments and Schedule: The Saturday data collection schedule will be provided at the beginning of the

semester. You will have the option to choose the Saturdays you want to commit to attend. The sessions occur

at churches in and around Austin Saturday mornings and last 3-5 hours. In addition, you will be assigned 1-3

participants each time there is a scheduled data collection session. These assignments will be made via email

each Saturday that there is a data collection session. The student will have approximately one week to take a

weekend dietary recall and a weekday recall over the phone for each assigned participant. Students will

coordinate directly with study participants via text and phone calls to find times to do the recalls.

I'M INTERESTED IN THIS PROJECT. WHAT SHOULD I DO NEXT?

The Office of Undergraduate Research recommends that you attend an info session or advising before contacting faculty members or project contacts about research opportunities. We'll cover the steps to get involved, tips for contacting faculty, funding possibilities, and options for course credit. Once you have attended an Office of Undergraduate Research info session or spoken to an advisor, you can use the "Who to contact" details for this project to get in touch with the project leader and express your interest in getting involved.
