UT Austin Beckman Scholars Program

The purpose of the UT Austin Beckman Scholars Program is to provide an in-depth, sustained research experience for exceptionally talented, full-time undergraduate students.

The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation provides financial support for a student selected as a Beckman Scholar over two consecutive summers and one academic year of research. In conjunction with the Annual Beckman Symposium, it offers an academically stimulating and unique educational experience.

Qualifications

Eligibility: To be considered for the UT Austin Beckman Scholars Program, you must be:

  • a US citizen, permanent resident of the US or its possessions, or DACA recipient
  • enrolled as a full-time student in your second year and in good academic standing
  • majoring in chemistry, biology, or biochemistry
  • considering a PhD, MD, or MD/PhD after graduation

Application Process and Timeline:

  • Initial Application (Due at Midnight on Wednesday Feb 19, 2025)
  • Semi-finalists will be notified around the end of February. They will have three weeks to write and submit an original research proposal and provide a letter of recommendation.
  • Finalists will be selected based on the originality, feasibility, and rigor of their research proposals and their potential as independent researchers. They will present their ideas and be interviewed in-person by groups of mentors at the end of March.
  • Two new UT Austin Beckman Scholars will be selected each year.

Important Note: Once selected as a Beckman Scholar, students must choose a faculty mentor from the list below to supervise their research. This program cannot support research in other labs.

Duties

Students are expected to work continuously for 15 months in the mentor's lab on their independent research project.

Financial Support Provided to a Beckman Scholar:
• First Summer - $6,800 stipend (40 hrs/week for 10 weeks)
• Academic Year - $4,600 stipend (10 hrs/week)
• Second Summer - $6,800 stipend (40 hrs/week for 10 weeks)
• Student Scientific Supply and Travel Funds - $2,800
