For 25+ years, Dr. Swanson has served the field of education as a special education teacher, college instructor, researcher, public speaker, and writer. Swanson's consistent focus has been on improving educational opportunities for struggling readers and students with learning disabilities. She is currently a Research Professor with a dual appointment in the Department of Special Education at The University of Texas at Austin and the Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk.

Dr. Swanson has served as principal investigator or Co-Principal Investigator on projects exceeding $32 million to date, all focused on preventing or remediating reading difficulties.
